The paper discusses the preliminary findings from a comparative analysis of the Khasis and the Karbis – two indigenous communities of Nortn Eastern India with two distinctly different kinship systems. It focuses on the inverse relationship between female autonomy and fertility emphasizing the fact that the decisions related to reproduction are not just determined by individual level factors.
