The paper is a review of existing literature on tribal health, illness and medicine of Orissa. It points to two sets of literature in the area. The first set attributes the tribal health outcomes implicitly or explicitly to the tribal ‘beliefs’ which do not conform to scientific knowledge and the second set identifies local categories of illnesses, healing practices and the role of medicine men. The analysis of the literature identifies issues that need to be addressed in further research.
