The paper attempt to explore and document the lived experiences of being in unwed motherhood among a tribal population of South India using qualitative methods. The analysis brings out the stigma related to the experience, the diverse emotional and psychological responses it produces on the women themselves and their families. The immediate and long term consequences of the stigma are also discussed.
