The paper explores the process of social transformation among the Santal tribes of India using a combination of secondary data analysis and ethnography. It also tries to describe the ethno history of the tribes, with emphasis on their struggle for national identity, social identity and main streaming. A major part of the paper explores the role of language in their movement for identity and their process of language transformation.
