This review paper compiles the evidence from clinical studies, the reported health consequences of the Bhopal gas tragedy, which is one of the worst industrial disasters in the history of mankind. It discusses the evidence on the effects of survivors and on the in utero exposure to methyl isocyanate in the first trimester of pregnancy. It also discusses the findings of recent experimental studies on the effects of methyl isocyanate at the molecular level – immunotoxic complications, toxico-genomic effect, inflammatoryresponse, mitochondrial oxidative stress, chromosomal and microsatellite instability in cultured mammalian cells. The authors recommend long term monitoring of the affected areas using well designed cohort and case control studies.
